About the Program

In 1993, LGBTQ people could not legally marry or openly serve in the U.S. military and faced discriminatory laws criminalizing homosexuality throughout the country. Despite these challenges and hostilities, in 1993, Christine Kehoe was elected to the San Diego City Council and became the region’s first openly LGBTQ elected official. Today, LGBTQ elected officials serve openly throughout San Diego and beyond.

Duane Morris Pride is pleased to present a conversation with state Senator Toni G. Atkins, former state Senator Kehoe and San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria that traces the history of LGBTQ political campaigns and successes from 1993 to the present and future. Duane Morris partner David Watson, who worked on many LGBTQ political campaigns over the years and co-founded the Tom Homann LGBT Law Association, will moderate the discussion.
