Lewis F. Gould, Jr. is the immediate past chairman of the Intellectual Property Practice Group, having served in that capacity from 1999-2011. He has focused his practice for more than 40 years on intellectual property law, with emphasis on domestic and international patent and trademark matters.

He advises clients on a broad spectrum of patent and related issues in a variety of technologies. He advises clients in trademark and copyright matters, including clearance, registration and litigation. He also manages patent and trademark litigation before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and in federal courts, locally and nationally.

Mr. Gould was counsel for the petitioners in the Markman case, a landmark patent case in which the Supreme Court held that the Seventh Amendment does not guarantee the right to jury trial in disputes about the meaning of terms in a patent claim.

Mr. Gould was counsel to respondent in College Savings Bank v. Florida Prepaid Postsecondary Education Expense Board in which the Supreme Court held unconstitutional the Trademark Remedy Clarification Act of 1992 which abrogated states' Eleventh Amendment immunity from suits brought against them for alleged violation of the Lanham Act.

Admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and Florida, Mr. Gould is a 1966 graduate of The Dickinson School of Law. He received his undergraduate degree from Temple University, where, since 1985, he has served as a member of the Board of Trustees, and is a member of the Board of Trustees of Temple University Health System. Mr. Gould is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Fox Chase Cancer Center. Mr. Gould was appointed by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania to the Pennsylvania Lawyers Fund for Client Security, and is currently serving a three-year term as chair of the board.

  • Counsel for Canadian clothing manufacturer in U.S. opposition proceeding where summary judgment was obtained in matter in which neither entity made use of mark in the U.S. Akt 21. v. Fame Jeans, Inc., 77 USQP2d (BNA) 1861 (TTAB2006)

  • Counsel for two clients having cases in which the Supreme Court reached decisions of great significance in the Patent Law and Trademark Law.

  • Responsible for patent litigation for television production equipment manufacturer.

  • Responsible for U.S. and International trademark portfolio of more than two thousand trademarks for a Fortune 100 entity based in France.

  • Responsible for preparation of numerous patent and trademark infringement and validity opinions for numerous U.S. and foreign clients.

  • Responsible for U.S. and International trademark portfolio for U.S. manufacturer of home equipment including enforcement of trademark rights around the U.S.
