PHILADELPHIA, January 24, 2025―Duane Morris was named a 2024 Intellectual Property Practice Group of the Year by Law360 for its work in patent and trademark litigation. The award recognizes practice groups that achieved great outcomes for their clients in significant IP litigation matters throughout the past year.
“We’re honored to be recognized for the exceptional outcomes this group of attorneys delivered for clients in 2024” said L. Norwood (Woody) Jameson, chair of Duane Morris’ Intellectual Property Practice Group. “Our Intellectual Property Practice Group has 91 members, 54 of them are members of the patent bar and 11 attorneys have doctoral degrees. This allows us to staff cases with lawyers that often have both industry experience and academic training in the technology at issue in any given case. Our geographic profile – with offices in the busiest patent venues, such as the Eastern District of Texas, Western District of Texas, Northern District of California and District of Delaware – results in our lawyers having real insights into the forums and the predilections of the judges and jury pools. We believe this combination of subject matter and venue knowledge differentiates ourselves from many of our competitor firms within the AmLaw 100.”
“We always staff our cases with a diverse team of lawyers that includes a combination of subject matter-focused attorneys, litigators with knowledge of the venue, and lawyers that litigate patent cases but do not have technical backgrounds” says Matt Gaudet, vice chair of the Intellectual Property Practice Group and chair of the Patent Litigation Group. “We then encourage freedom of thought and collaboration from the entire team. Taking an idea, whether from a senior partner or first year associate, and then debating it and improving upon it as team leads to case-winning strategies and outcomes. The collegial and collaborative nature of our group makes working on cases fun, while driving cases towards the ultimate goal of the best possible outcomes for our clients, whether that is defined by our clients as early resolution, winning at summary judgment, or prevailing at trial.”
In the world of trademark litigation, Jameson says “I could not be more impressed with the group of lawyers that litigate in this space. Simply put, our trademark lawyers know the law inside and out, and I am just amazed at the case-winning strategies they devise and implement for our clients.”
Law360 highlighted the firm’s significant intellectual property wins over the past year. A sample of them include:
In April 2024, the firm won a complete noninfringement jury verdict in Waco, Texas, before Judge Alan Albright, on behalf of Roku against allegations that its streaming video players infringe two Ioengine LLC patents. The jury ruled that Roku did not infringe any asserted claim of Ioengine’s patents and thus did not reach the issue of validity.
In March 2024, the firm represented Trojan Battery Company LLC, in a case against Trojan EV LLC and Golf Carts of Cypress LLC, for trademark infringement and unfair competition related to the defendants’ sale of Trojan-EV branded golf carts. A permanent injunction was obtained and a profit of more than $4.7 million was awarded.
In December 2023, the firm won a complete defense verdict for Cisco Systems Inc. in the retrial of what had been reported as the largest verdict in the history of patent litigation. A finding of noninfringement on all remaining patents resulted in a total defense victory against all 11 patents asserted in the case.
